Surface preparation
The subfloor surface must be free of all residues (glue, paint, plaster, etc.). Rectify slight surface irregularities with a sander or scraper.
Reliefs must be levelled and depressions filled with a suitable cementitious compound, so that the subfloor has no more than 4.7 mm of unevenness over a span of 3 m (3/16 in. over 10 ft.). If this is the case, apply a self-levelling compound to level the surface.
Allow to dry according to the drying time indicated by the manufacturer (drying time may vary according to ambient room humidity).
It may be necessary to use a scraper to level the surface once the self-levelling compound has dried. Once the surface is smooth and flat, sweep or vacuum it for thorough cleaning.
Laying out vinyl planks
Planks/tiles should be laid parallel to the wall that forms the main visual line of the room (usually the wall opposite the room entrance).
Measure to determine the center of the room, then adjust the center point so that the planks/tiles are evenly distributed on both sides.
Mark this center line on the floor with a chalk line or fine-tipped felt-tip pen. The boards/tiles in the first and last rows may need to be cut so that the layout is even from one end of the room to the other.
Adhesive application
When you're ready to install the planks/tiles, apply the adhesive using a suitable trowel and observing the adhesive's application time as specified in the manufacturer's installation instructions.
Allow the adhesive to dry for the time recommended by the manufacturer (drying time may vary according to temperature and humidity levels).
Preparing and installing vinyl planks
To get started, prepare your planks by cutting several boards of different sizes (if your full plank measures 4', cut 3 planks at 1', 2' and 3'). Once you start laying, to avoid a staircase effect, start with a 4' plank, then continue with a 2' plank, followed by a 3' plank, and finish with a 1' plank.
After installing your first row, be sure to offset the end joints by at least 8” from the previous row.
Make sure there are no gaps between the planks/tiles, and that they are tightly packed together on all 4 sides. For your cut, place a plank directly on top of the previously laid row.
Place another plank on top, against the wall. Use the utility knife to cut your board/tile to the required length.
Keep the remaining plank/tile, as this will be useful for starting the following rows.
Installing the last row
For the last row, place a plank directly on top of the previously laid row.
Use the utility knife to cut the plank/tile to the required width.
Pressing the vinyl planks with the roller
Once the planks/tiles have been laid, use a floor roller to press them firmly to the floor.
Cleaning adhesive residues
To remove adhesive residues from the floor surface, use a clean white cloth soaked in water if the adhesive is damp.
Reinstall your finishing mouldings once your floor installation is complete.
