Choosing a transition molding for a floor depends on the types of flooring you're installing and the height differences between them.
MOLDINGS FOR SOFT SURFACES/WOOD
Quarter round
Use: placed around walls or furniture to fill the gap between the floor and the bottom of the wall. Often used to finish moldings.
Description: hides small imperfections while creating a clean finish.
Reducer
Use: ideal for transitions between surfaces of different heights, such as wood flooring and vinyl or tile flooring.
Description: its sloped shape bridges the difference in level, providing a smooth, aesthetic transition.

T-moulding
Use: for transitions between two floor surfaces of the same height, e.g. between two types of laminate flooring or between wood and laminate.
Description: this molding has the shape of an inverted T. The lower part fits into the gap between the two floors, and the upper part covers the junction, creating a clean finish.

MOLDINGS FOR TRANSITIONS OF THE SAME HEIGHT
T-profile
Use: T-profile provides a smooth transition between two hard flooring surfaces of the same height, such as ceramic, natural stone or laminate, in renovation projects.
Description: this profile is specially designed to protect tile edges from chipping, and is ideal for transitions between different types of hard flooring (wood and laminate).

Metal profile
Use: Metal profile (L-shaped) provides elegant, discreet protection for tile edges.
Description: this minimally angled profile prevents tiles and grout from chipping, and offers a visible surface reduced to approx. 1/8” (3 mm), ideal for subtle transitions between different stable floor coverings.

Slope transition profiles
Fixed slope profile
Use: the fixed slope profile provides a smooth transition between tiled flooring and adjacent, lower flooring, while protecting tile edges.
Description: this profile prevents tile chipping and reduces the risk of tripping thanks to its gently sloping transitions, making it ideal for transitioning from tile to dry concrete or vinyl.

Flexible slope profile
Use: the flexible slope profile provides a smooth transition between ceramic tiles and a lower floor covering, such as carpet, while protecting tile edges.
Description: this profile prevents tile chipping and is designed to cover and protect the edge of adjacent carpeting thanks to a 1/4” (6 mm) gap under the slope.

How to choose
- Flooring types: first determine the flooring materials you'll be connecting (wood, vinyl, ceramic, etc.).
- Height difference: measure whether the two coverings are at the same level, or whether there is a height difference to compensate for.
- Aesthetics: make sure the molding's color and finish match your siding for a smooth, elegant appearance.
- Functional: think about how the space will be used (for example, a stair nosing is crucial for stairs to prevent wear and tear).
These transition moldings provide an aesthetic finish while guaranteeing the safety and durability of the junctions between your different floor coverings.
